Post-16 Library
Trinity Solutions Academy is intent upon implementing a whole-site approach to literacy: encouraging students to engage with a variety of texts including newspaper articles, poems, novels, autobiographies and fact books during enrichment sessions, timetabled lessons and break times.
This term, the English department were fortunate enough to receive a budget to overhaul the Post-16 library. Following weeks of research, we have assembled an impressive collection of fiction and non-fiction texts that are not only suitable for “reluctant readers” but are celebrated for exploring issues close to our young people’s hearts.
Our hope for the library is threefold: 1) students will no longer fear the written word and will be empowered to improve their reading skills; 2) students will have an outlet or ‘escape’ when they become overwhelmed; and 3) students will realise that they are not alone in their thoughts, feelings and experiences and thereby find new methods of processing them.
To this end, Jessica (the English Tutor) has worked hard to catalogue the new additions under these headings:
- Mental Health & Wellbeing
- Diverse Voices
- LGBTQ+
- Relationships
- Exceptionalities
- Escapism
- Non-Fiction
- Children’s Literature (Babies & Toddlers)
It has been incredible to see our students’ reaction to the library’s resources and to see them making frequent use of our luxurious new reading chairs. For the first time in Solutions’ history, students are borrowing books to take home and read in their spare time including Peaky Blinders – The Real Story, Poems of the Great War and The Miniaturist. We have also witnessed students with dyslexia and exceptionalities excel at reading aloud with the support of their tutors.
This is only the beginning of our Post-16 reading campaign. Keep your eyes peeled as we collaborate with learners and well-known organisations to build on our library collection and promote literacy across the trust.
