Christmas Angels: A Creative Enterprise Project

In LLDD construction enterprise sessions, learners have commenced a hands-on project to create beautifully crafted wooden angels as part of their joinery curriculum. This project not only teaches essential joinery skills but also allows learners to express their creativity and craftsmanship in a meaningful way.

During the first week the angels were designed and cut out, this included a base, body, and wings. Learners learnt how to break down the design into different parts - such as the body, head, wings, and base - ensuring that each piece could be cut and assembled with precision. Once the designs were finalised, learners watched their tutor Jim cutting the various components of their angels. Using a mix of hand tools and power tools, the body, head, and wings from solid wood were cut out. “Seeing the design makes me excited for Christmas’’ noted a learner in the class.

With all the pieces cut and joints made, learners carefully assembled their angels. Using wood glue, clamps, and some final adjustments, they attached the head, wings, and body. Some learners opted to add a base to make their angels stand which was drilled into the body. After the assembly was complete, learners took the time to sand their angels to perfection, smoothing out any rough edges. Then came the fun part: painting. Learners chose to paint their angels with bright, festive colours. Over the coming weeks the angels will be finished, here are some examples of the progress the learners have made.
